Setting up a new laptop
« on: September 04, 2013, 11:36:18 am »
Hi, my new laptop just got delivered and after starting it, I was amazed how much crap software it has inside. Do you know about any good article about setting up/customizing new laptop? Or any handy, cool gadgets I might like ?

It's Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with Windows8 (blurgh!)

Also, I'd like to get back the ol' good XP/Vista/Win7 feel, but that's more of a third-party programs thing.

I would just go over it with a steam roller and just format the whole OS, reinstall win7 on it (custom CD, not the given one!) and this way I'd only have to install the drivers manually, and let the bloat fuck itself.

Tho I have little to no experience with laptops, I've always been a desktop dude; I am not exactly aware how much of the installed stuff is actually bloat and how much of those is a critical requirement, so as everything can work properly.

Sadly I don't have any custom OS CD. So I have to stick with the pre-installed Win8.

That's one of those things, I don't like about laptop deals in Czech Rep. They almost always come with pre-installed OS and tons of bloatware,

Same in Belgium dude, I'm getting my new one next week and it's gonna be the same :/ I'll probably revert to win7 too if I can get my hands on all the drivers

Once again, I'd advise you to take a look at your profile picture. I'm pretty sure your laptop can burn DVDs and ISO files are easily obtainable, if you know where to look.

I don't see the point in using such OS, when I have an original one, which will always be up to date, with latest drivers, etc. It would make much more sense if I did it with horrible Vista, but I still did not. Plus I believe in the evolution of Win8 as believe in evolution of Diablo 3.

I use Win 8 on computer at work and it's actually very nice system. Metro can take some time to get used to, but you can disable that :)

I'm not saying you should pirate and I'm also not saying that a pirated version of Win7 updates perfectly. I'm definitely not saying that you can contact me for information on pirating a proper OS.

Is that up to date now? I remember trying is quite some time ago when Floyd mentionedbit on the old forums but many of the installers were out of date or didnt work at all.

I reinstalled my laptop a week ago. I just downloaded all the programs I needed to my external HD and installed tjem after formatying and reinstalling windows. This worked fine but if ninite is working properly now it could still save some time and effort. I guess Im also a bit of a control freak and prefer to install everything manually. I dont remember if ninite allows you to customize your installation ans e.g. choose your destination folder.
